GIS Internship: City of Richmond & EPA Region 9
EPA Region 9 in San Francisco is seeking two students with GIS mapping experience and other multi-disciplinary skills for a 2 to 3 month volunteer internship related to renewable energy. The interns will be working with Region 9 and the City of Richmond to identify information sources and collect data consistent with criteria in a tool being developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to screen potential sites (e.g., warehouse rooftops and parking lots, brownfields, abandoned properties, landfills) for their suitability for solar system installations. The interns will be supplementing data for the City of Richmond provided by NREL, for example, determining the useable acreage for rooftop or ground-mounted solar at various sites. Some of the data collection will require tracking down information sources at different local level departments, and in other cases, visiting sites. A car is not required, so you should be willing to use public transit. Part of the interns' focus would be on how to most efficiently collect the necessary data, as well as visually synthesize it with GIS maps. The interns' experience and feedback in assembling the data will help inform preparation of a guidebook for cities on how to apply the tool.
Start date is May 2011. The primary location for this internship will be the City of Richmond in their government building, reporting to both a contact at the City as well as at EPA, Region 9 in San Francisco (Karen Irwin). The candidates should be able to come up to speed quickly and work collaboratively with minimal oversight. Experience with GIS (more than 1 class), including ArcGIS and Google Earth Pro, data analysis and research is required.
For questions, or to send an email with a brief description of your interest and qualifications along with a resume, please contact Karen Irwin at irwin.karen@epa.gov.

OurEarth.org Environmental Leadership Program
This summer join the OurEarth.org community and become an intern in their 2011 Environmental Leadership Program. This is a rare opportunity to develop as a leader and learn many of the skills necessary to create significant environmental changes. In addition to leadership training, interns will work on diverse environmental projects to help the organization and website expand, be in a team with students from other colleges, earn course credit, and connect with OurEarth.org's large network of environmental professionals. Because OurEarth.org is still a young organization this is an opportunity to join on the ground floor of many up-and-coming initiatives. All work is done remotely - from home, campus, or anywhere else, yet interns will still have frequent contact with the OurEarth.org management and other interns via conference calls, email, webinars, and other electronic mediums. OurEarth.org is a national 501(c)3 non-profit organization and grassroots initiative that aims to aid and develop environmental leaders, in part, by transforming the way environmental programs, activities, and information are found on the internet. A more detailed program description, the internship application, and further information about the OurEarth.org organization is available here: http://www.ourearth.org/students/. The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. If you want to apply, act quickly since admission is done on a ROLLING BASIS and acceptances will begin to be mailed in March. If you have any questions, please contact John Ullman at (410) 878-6485 or jgu@duke.edu, to get additional information.
