Ecology Action will be offering a 2-month long Summer Internship Program from June 15th to August 15th in various locations in Northern California. The program teaches college-level students small-scale, sustainable farming methods and how they relate to issues of food insecurity at home and abroad.

Field Assistants for Dispersal Study of Black & Virginia Rails
Assistants will help with capturing and collection of tissues from Black and Virginia Rails for genetic and stable isotope analyses. Assistants must be able to set up mistnets, remove birds from mistnets, band birds, and take morphometric measurements on birds. Assistants should also be able to maintain accurate records of capture information using a database. The ideal candidates would be: 1) experienced in mistnetting, banding, and bleeding small birds; 2) well organized with a record of being able to conduct fieldwork as part of a team; 3) have a driver’s license and experience operating a 4WD vehicle; 4) be interested in population ecology and dispersal; 5) be able to walk up to several miles and be strong enough to carry moderate loads; and 6) have the ability to interface with the public and communicate with private landowners. Field work will take place in the San Francisco Bay and Sierra Foothills regions of Northern California. Work in the Sierra Foothills will be based out of the Sierra Foothills Research and Extension Center in Browns Valley (http://groups.ucanr.org/sierrafoothill/). Native Plant Nursery Internship - San Bruno Mountain Watch
San Bruno Mountain Watch’s Mission Blue native Plant Nursery is seeking a motivated individual to work in a community-based, habitat restoration program restoring the biodiversity of San Bruno Mountain. San Bruno Mountain is a unique island of biodiversity in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. This ecological treasure is home to several endangered species, dozens of rare plants, year-round springs, ancient native oak groves, and 5,000 year-old Native American village sites. San Bruno Mountain is the last significant, viable remnant of the Franciscan ecosystem that once covered San Francisco. The regional importance of the mountain’s high biodiversity, lead renowned Harvard Biologist E. O. Wilson to list San Bruno Mountain as one of 18 biodiversity hotspots in need of preservation.
The nursery intern will assist with native plant seed collection and propagation as well as overall nursery management and maintenance. He/she will also assist in Wednesday morning community volunteer workdays at the nursery as well as Saturday habitat restoration community workdays on San Bruno Mountain. The intern will gain valuable experience in developing and running volunteer programs, native plant propagation and nursery operations. Previous knowledge of California natives and/or propagation techniques is ideal but not necessary. Nursery intern will learn California native plant identification and propagation. Compensation: $100/week stipend, and personalized training and marketable work experience. Final Application Filing Date (December 10, 2011). The Native Plant Nursery internship is a part time (20 hours/week), six month long position (January –June). Video Editing Internship at Department of Environment
If you have video editing skills, there is an internship opportunity with the San Francisco Department of Environment. As many of you may already know, one of the major campaigns for the Department of the Environment is the SF Community InSight Project. Although paper and photo surveys are what the majority of responses are composed of, they also use video to survey people in the campaign. They would like to take the latest batch of video interviews and post them on the SFE YouTube channel as well as to the online forum at www.ideas4SF.org.That’s where YOU come in! They are looking for someone who is skilled and knowledgeable in video editing software, who can edit videos in a timely fashion as well place titles and logos on the videos. Ideally they want somebody who already owns editing software to provide the flexibility to not only work in the office, but also from home. Experience using YouTube as a platform is a plus. “That's the Tuolumne in my Tap” is an hour-long presentation given to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Alameda Counties. The program is designed to educate local students about where their water comes from and to promote an ethic of environmental stewardship. The presentation focuses on the history and special qualities of the Tuolumne River, the animals that depend on the River, and what we all can do to help protect the River by conserving water.
