Prospective Majors
The Environmental Studies Program is Impacted
The number of Environmental Studies majors has grown rapidly in the last five years. In the Summer of 2010 the CSU Chancellor's Office declared the SF State Environmental Studies Program impacted. The impacted designation applies to all five Environmental Studies Program degrees. While we are an impacted program, the Environmental Studies Program is accepting applicaitons for new majors and we encourage you to apply. We expect to be able to accept more students in 2012 than we did in 2011.
Spring 2012 Admissions
The Environmental Studies Program will not be accepting applications for new transfer students or first time freshman for Spring 2012. However, petitions for change of major to ENVS by current SF State students for Spring 2012 will be accepted on a continuous basis throughout the Spring semester. To apply bring a completed Change of Major Form and DARS report to the ENVS office in HSS 210. To be considered for admission you must have completed fewer than 96 units by the end of the Fall 2011 semester.
How to Apply to be an Environmental Studies Major for Fall 2012
For Fall 2012 all students wishing to become Environmental Studies majors (transfer students, first time freshmen, and current SF State students wishing to change majors to ENVS) will have to apply to the major. Transfer students and first time freshmen applicants to SF State will simply indicate Environmental Studies (any one of the five degrees) as their first choice of major when applying for admission to the campus.
We will notify those accepted into the major by April 1st, 2012, and those wishing to choose ENVS as their major must notify the department by May 1st. We will be using a combination of quantitative (e.g. GPA or GPA plus SAT for freshman) and qualitative criteria to rank applicants. Change of majors will be ranked for admission to the major along with transfer students and first-time freshmen using the same criteria. We will keep a wait list of those not accepted and may offer admittance to the major to additional students wishing to change their major to ENVS in the summer and or fall.
